Watersound gallery: introduction

Art detail

It always concerned me that my work, when sold by a London Gallery to private buyers, would go off into the ether.  Paintings that had taken several weeks to produce would never be seen again… it was deeply unsatisfying.  An author can have a row of his or her published works on the shelf; and a composer or musician a similar line of CDs… I could never have the same sense of accomplishment.

I decided on a different approach and eventually have my own Gallery, where visitors can see the best work and in context it would give a greater understanding about the origins of its development over the years and the cultural influences of the different locations where the work was produced.  It would also be non-commercial … another area in which I have always felt uncomfortable. The Watersound Gallery has arrived!  It is situated in Burray Village, in the Orkney Islands 11 miles from the capital Kirkwall.  There are over 80 works on display in 5 Galleries.

Because this Gallery does not receive any public subsidies, a small entry charge of £2 per adult is made.  Youngsters under 14, accompanied by an adult, are free. There are toilet facilities with disabled access and a car-parking area.

Initially it is proposed to open the Gallery only on Saturdays and Sundays (10am – 5pm): large groups of ten or more at other times by arrangement.
